quel che morde
dev’esser nutrito di nuovo

la tua ferita aperta
il serpente aspetta

whatever bites
must be fed again

your wound gapes
the snake waits

come un uccello
preso al laccio in una trappola
geometrica

conosci solo il desiderio
di volar via dalle forme

like a bird
snared in a noose
of geometry

you know only the desire
to fly up from forms

chino sul bordo
con una corda e un secchio

ma non sei tu

l’acqua profonda echeggia
oltre i papaveri rossi
un altro pozzo trabocca
di sporco

la tua perdita
è sepolta in profondità

crouching at the rim
with a rope and bucket

but you are not

the deep water echoes
beyond the red poppies
another well brims
with dirt

your loss
is buried deep

da Il mare a Sète / The Sea at Sète

come il mare si solleva
in goccioline di nebbia

in questa calma

e mentre entra l’alba scende
in pallida luce vaporosa

quando lo vedi
dimentichi

tenti di dimenticare

lo chiami sorgere del mare

come l’acqua sale
dalla scura terra
l’oscura sorgente

mentre l’altra oscurità
addensata lassù
s’attenua e diventa

cascata di luce
sorgere del sole

as the sea rises
in droplets of mist

through the calmness

as it enters dawn descending
in pale vaporous light

when you see
you forget

try to forget

call it searise

as the water ascends
from the dark earth
the dark source

while the other darkness
gathered up there
fades becomes

lightfall
sunrise

sassi arrotondati levigati
da acque millenarie

o dal tuo improvviso desiderio di purezza

al limite della sabbia
e del cambiamento costante

nella tua mente

li prendi in mano
li esamini
li rigetti in mare

tutti i sassi imperfetti
tutti i desideri imperfetti

rocks rounded smoothed
by age-old waters

or by your sudden desire for purity

at the limit of sand
and constant change

in your mind

you take them in hand
examine them
toss them back into the sea

all the imperfect rocks
all the imperfect wishes

forse i gabbiani
devono credere

e persino le conchiglie di carne viva
nei loro recessi acquatici
tra le alghe ondeggianti

tu non lo sai

forse il vento
forse le onde
faranno delle allusioni

mormorando mentre si allontanano

tenti di ascoltare

questo primo mattino

se solo
fosse il primo mattino

perhaps seagulls
have to believe

and even shells whose flesh is alive
in their watery lairs
amid the swaying seaweed

you don’t know

perhaps the wind
perhaps the waves
will give hints

murmuring as they move on

you try to listen

to this first morning

if only
it were the first morning
